When I began writing about cannabis and sex products in Canada, I didn’t anticipate that much of the interest I’d receive for products would be for”CBD anal suppositories.” Maybe I was naïve or it’s just that I hadn’t tried them yet.
According to Dr. Jess O’Reilly, Lovehoney‘s Relationship Expert and Sexologist, the entire suppository market, including pharmaceuticals, is growing and expected to reach 2.8B by 2033 with a compounded growth rate of 5.7% annually.
Regarding suppositories for anal sex in particular, O’Reilly cautions people to stay away from numbing suppositories.
“I can’t speak to the safety of suppositories, but I do want to offer a reminder that you don’t want to use numbing agents—which are popular for anal sex—as their desensitization can increase your risk of injury during anal play,” she said.
“The ability to perceive pain helps you to know how much you can handle. The anus is not only sensitive, but also thin-skinned and prone to small tears which increase the risk of infection. By temporarily numbing your butt , you are not only less likely to stop if you experience a small tear and more likely to experience pain once the effects wear off.”
She adds that “a more pleasurable and safer alternative to numbing suppositories involves more foreplay, lots of lube and high levels of relaxation prior to penetration.”

This is because the rectum is the part of the digestive system immediately above the anus, and suppositories are typically designed to be inserted into the rectum rather than the anus itself.
On the other hand, there are, in fact, some CBD anal suppositories out there intended for use during anal sex, so in this regard, it seems correct to call them that.
